Smelling Colours Contest Winner Announced
The 2016 IIDEXCanada Smelling Colours Contest winner has been announced. Mimi Salem, Creative Director for Metrie has won $25,000CDN in design fees from Nose Knows Design. Tracy Pepe, founder and chief perfumer of Nose Knows Design will work with Mimi over the next year to develop a custom scent design solution for Metrie.
What is scent design? Scent design is also referred to as olfactive branding and provides solutions intended to incorporate or enhance a scent within a space thereby supporting an overall aesthetic and emotional impact of our spatial experience while helping to strengthen a given brand. For more than 20 years, Nose Knows Design has been scenting spaces and celebrating the positive use of scent. Tracy’s clients can be found in the hospitality and retail sector, in addition to builders and private homeowners. Her website describes her work as building “experiential design collaborations with architects and interior designers that are based on sensorial expansion” where scent strategy and colour deepen a visitor’s experience.
Mimi Salem, Creative Director for Metrie began her career in the fashion industry which has honed her work and business strategy on creative projects for brands such as homeclick.com and Restoration Hardware. Metrie is a family-owned business founded in 1926 that focuses on creating high-quality, finely crafted architectural elements. They are also the largest supplier and manufacturer of solid wood and composite moulding in North America. The company has their own milling capacity and therefore possesses the internal capability to create custom profiles and streamline both production and shipping—in addition to maintaining seven solid wood and MDF manufacturing facilities, plus 26 distribution centres across the U.S. and Canada. As Mimi notes, "Working with Tracy from Nose Knows Design is a dream come true for me! My current project centres around creating a place for people to meet our brand. Designing a scent with Tracy will be the perfect way to surprise and delight our customers as they experience Metrie."
