Designed by internationally renowned Toronto-based Diamond Schmitt Architects, the Ryerson Image Centre is situated within the newly expanded School of Image Arts with its much sought-after undergraduate and graduate programs in photography, film and new media. The Ryerson Image Centre will house the famous Black Star Collection at Ryerson University, featuring historical photojournalistic prints covering major events of the 20th century, and the Mira Godard Collection of fine art photography from the 19th to the 21st century. The University currently boasts holdings of almost 300,000 photographs, with a potential growth of up to 1,000,000 images over the next five to 10 years. Both the vault and the gallery are designed to meet international preservation and exhibition standards. Expanding its collections will remain an important focus for the Ryerson Gallery and Research Centre.

In consultation with the Canadian Conservation Institute and the Moveable Cultural Property Board, the program and design was developed to house the photography collection in a climate controlled “Class A” exhibition environment that enables the handling of all collections for research and exhibition purposes. The gallery is divided into three spaces: an Introductory Gallery that introduces visitors to the collection and provides information about current exhibitions; a student Gallery where Ryerson students can showcase their talent to a broader audience; and a flexible open space Main Gallery which can be freely arranged and subdivided to accommodate a broad range of exhibitions.

The print vault will house the entire collection in a safe and highly climate-controlled environment. The space is equipped with compact storage shelves and hanging racks, to maximize the available storage space.

The Portuguese Seventh-day Adventist Church is located on College Street just west of Bathurst. Built in 1889, it was recently sold to a developer who is turning the church into 4 ultra-luxury freehold houses.

Take this one hour tour with the developer and designer of the project – Joe Brennan. Joe hopes that his efforts to create one of the most unique residences in the city will spur more rejuvenation of the area. College and Palmerston used to be one of the key addresses for the upper-middle class of Toronto and the new owners hope that work like this will continue to push the area back to where it should be. The Brennan Team is working to restore the rain-damaged carvings, the worn windows and leaky roof to resurrect the building’s original glory and completely update the interiors.

TOUR LEADER:

Joe Brennan has been designing and building custom homes and condominiums for 35 years in Canada, US and Bahamas.
